How could it make us stupid?

Many people have begun to believe that the Internet has made us stupid, whether it is Google or any other online device. I believe this is simply not true at all. Though the Internet has made everything easier just like Nicholas Carr talks about in his article “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” It is in fact making us smarter. The use of the Internet in the last decade has grown significantly. Times have changed and things are easier, but we need to learn how to adapt to those changes. Just like we had to adapt when the printing press was created. Our world has become so interconnected that it takes less than a minute to send information across the entire world. It has come to the point where it is quicker to send an email then to call long distance. So how does all this make us stupid? Everything we build is just an extension of our mind and imagination. The computer is basically just an extension of our brain.

The main problem I have with this article is when Carr talks about how he asked his friends if they had the same problems reading now compared to the past. Carr said that most of them agreed. Maybe it is just me, but I feel that the older generation may be struggling, but ours is having very few problems. Our generation is the children of the Internet. We have always had computers in our schools and a lot of us had some sort of Internet connection at home. As a pre-teen I forced my way into chat rooms and chatted away with my friends on A.O.L. Instant Messenger and I cannot imagine that anyone in our class hasn’t. It almost seems to me that the Internet has always existed. The last time I ever used the Dewey Decimal System was when I was in the 2nd or 3rd grade. Yes, Google and the Internet have made things easier. We have not become stupid from using it though because the amount of information we share with the rest of the world is astronomical.

  1. I liked that you pointed to another side of looking at mass information on the internet. Most of it may not be as in depth as a novel or research paper, but you can find novels and research papers on google too! It's just we don't usually go on google for that kind of thing. When the situation calls for heavier reading, anyone will quickly learn that search engines won't suffice and head over to the library. They both have their purpose. It's just a different way of learning.
